322 Conchester Highway

Smithbridge Road to Close June 21-24 for Bridge Demolition

Smithbridge Road will be closed in Concord Township, Delaware County for demolition of the bridge that formerly carried U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) over the roadway, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Weather permitting, Smithbridge Road will be closed and detoured between Concord Road and Bethel Road/Station from 7:00 PM Friday, June 21, to 6:00 AM Monday, June 24. During the closure, motorists will be directed to use Concord Road, U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) and U.S. 202 (Wilmington Pike). Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone.

Following weekend demolition activities, crews will begin constructing the northern half of the bridge which, when completed, will carry two westbound lanes of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) over Smithbridge Road. On May 16, U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) traffic was shifted onto the newly-built eastern lanes of the highway and bridge marking the end of Stage 1 construction. Construction on the Smithbridge Road is expected to be completed in late October.

The bridge replacement is part of PennDOT’s $62.6 million project to widen, reconstruct and upgrade a 2.6-mile section of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) from U.S 1 (Baltimore Pike) to just east of Featherbed Lane/Mattson Road near Clayton Park.
